Course 5: An appropriate balance between knowledge, skills and reflection leading to understanding

Knowledge, skills and understanding work together interdependently in the deepening of learning. Children must experience an appropriate mix of all three.

1 session (90 minutes)
Developing
1 day (4 x 90 minutes)
Mastering
2 days (8 x 90 minutes)

By the end of this unit, you will:

  1. Considered the difference between K, S and U
  2. Know about IPC learning focused planning
  3. Know about practices to enable teachers to provide opportunities to develop KSU and how the learning goals underpin classroom practice
  4. Know about how to involve children in the process

IPC Members

By the end of this unit, you will:

  1. Have consolidated and developed what you know about the differences between knowledge, skills and understanding
  2. Are able to explain and demonstrate the inter-relationship between knowledge, skills and understanding
  3. Be able to find ways to solve the knowledge overload problem
  4. Know the kinds of learning that help each to develop
  5. Are able to devise some simple activities for each and relate them to the IPC
  6. Know a range of ways that children can increase their K and develop their S and U
  7. Know a range of ways that the above can be promoted – through planning, practice and review
  8. Know about how greater consistency of the above can be achieved
  9. Be able to use the IPC Accreditation rubrics to make an initial evaluation of your school’s current status

By the end of this unit, you will:

  1. Know in some detail the characteristics of knowledge, skills and understanding and how each develops
  2. Be able to identify opportunities in the IPC where that relationship can be demonstrated and be able to explain them to colleagues
  3. Be able to design a series of activities that demonstrates that inter-relationship clearly
  4. Know how a whole school approach can be consolidated and sustained to promote a balance and understanding of K, S and U
  5. Know how this can sustained through planning, practice, reflection and review
  6. Know how all stakeholders can articulate the differences between KS and U and are aware of the implications
  7. Be able to use the IPC Accreditation Rubric to make an evaluation of your school’s current status
