English as an Additional Language (EAL) Course

(3 day course) (Monday 26th,Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th July)

This course is designed to provide specific support to both Beginning and Developing level practitioners working with EAL learners. It will be a combination of practical, ‘hands on’ ideas that support the IPC aims and principles and help you to work with these young learners. It will provide opportunities to explore and discuss the challenges of engaging EAL learners effectively in the IPC curriculum

By the end of the course you will:

  • know about how the IPC supports EAL learners and how schools use it to do so
  • know how an additional language is acquired and how you can accelerate the process
  • be able to adapt teaching resources and approaches to support EAL learners access the IPC curriculum quickly
  • be able to create a learning environment using tools, materials and ideas to support EAL learners
  • be able to use a range of strategies to raise the attainment of EAL learners’ reading, writing and communication skills

Course facilitator: Jane Denby

Jane Denby is an experienced EAL teacher and trainer. She has seventeen years experience of working with EAL children and teachers. She helped lead the implementation of a mother tongue programme at her school in The Hague and has recently presented at ECIS on this. Jane has a Masters of Education in Teaching English to speakers of other languages from Newcastle University and was the visiting lecturer for this course in Dubai. She also has a Masters in Education Management and specialises in assessment and curriculum. Jane has worked for the British Council and in International and Shell schools in Oman, Brunei, Dubai and Holland. She is a practitioner trainer with Fieldwork Education and has led training in the Netherlands and at previous Summer Schools. This year she has led training in Prague, Malaysia, Qatar and Gabon.
