The International Primary Curriculum

Great learning, Great teaching, Great fun

The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is an international curriculum providing a cross-curricular, thematic, rigorous teaching structure designed to engage children of all abilities in today’s world.

The IPC was originally designed and created by Fieldwork Education to provide an international curriculum for a group of 14 schools around the world serving the employees of Shell. Since its introduction in 2000 that figure has grown to over 500 schools in over 50 different countries.

The IPC was four years in preparation and its continued development today ensures that a current and highly relevant curriculum continues to evolve.

A Stimulus for Change

Over the past five years the IPC has been the stimulus for change in schools of wide-ranging standards. Many good schools are investing in the IPC as a means of going from good to great. Conversely, there is evidence to show that the IPC is a major player in turning around underachieving schools. The IPC is just as successful in inner-city schools as it is in international schools and small remote schools. It's just as relevant for children who need challenge and extension as it is for children who need support in accessing the mainstream curriculum.

All the IPC units seem to appeal to the children, whether boys or girls and whatever their learning ability or personal interests. And for me, it’s changed the way that I teach. The IPC encourages hands-on work and exploration, group activity and creative presentation. It’s removed so many boundaries for me so that I can be more flexible in my day. The activities are all interesting and the focus on one topic keeps the children engaged. They can see a purpose to what they’re doing and I can see a purpose to what I’m teaching.
